Some will say the City should live within its means. It does. Santee runs a lean, conservative budget, and the San Diego County Taxpayers Association agrees as noted in their endorsement of the measure.
Santee’s infrastructure needs have grown while the operating budget has not kept pace. We all drive the same streets. We all see the potholes and the wear on our roads. And we all expect that when we call 911, help arrives fast. These are service residents count on everyday.
Measure Y is a one cent local sales tax. By state law it cannot be charged on groceries or prescription medications, so it does not fall on necessities. Visitors who shop here help pay too. A resident advisory committee and independent polling set the priorities for funding:

▶ New Fire Station at Woodglen Vista to address response times
▶ Renovation of 55 year old Fire Station 4 (Cottonwood Ave)
▶ Two new fire engines
▶ Citywide storm drain replacements
▶ Restoration of 8 city bridges
▶ Citywide park improvements
The measure establishes an independent citizen oversight committee to safeguard spending and the tax would sunset after 10 years
The cost of doing nothing is NOT zero. Every year that major projects are delayed, construction costs increase, infrastructure continues to deteriorate, and future solutions become more expensive.
